From the Mayor’s Desk

Dear Residents and Friends of TR, Spring has officially sprung in TR! I hope you’ll take the time to check out all the fun spring events happening around the city. Our TR staff continues focusing on placemaking and small community gatherings for residents and guests to venture into town for samplings from our local businesses and restaurants.

Your TR Council is continuing to focus on how we improve and incorporate new amenities into our existing parks. We hope to see our new playground at Trailblazer Park and the newly paved basketball court at Athens Park up and running soon! We’ll post updates on our Facebook page, @DiscoverTravelersRest, so stay tuned!

Sincerely, Mayor Brandy Amidon

Inclusive Playground Coming to Trailblazer Park

You may have noticed a lot of activity in the lot behind the Summary Court next to Trailblazer Park this past month. We are happy to let you know that the City of Travelers Rest in partnership with the Greenville County Department of Parks and Recreation is building a new playground. The Adventure Park at Trailblazer is expected to be completed by the end of June and will be the first public inclusive playground within the City of Travelers Rest. It will include a jungle dome, obstacle course, double zip line, swing set, an ADA carousel, double tower with slides, a covered picnic shelter, ADA picnic tables, park benches, and more.
To help raise funds for the playground a giving campaign is underway. As of April 30, 2023, donations have exceeded $50,000! For more information about the park and how to become a contributor, visit Adventure Park at Trailblazer.

Curbside Recycling Ending June 30, 2023

Greater Greenville Sanitation, the company that services waste collection for Travelers Rest residents, will end its curbside recycling collection program on June 30, 2023. Travelers Rest City officials conducted an extensive review of alternative providers and associated costs and have made the difficult decision to end curbside recycling pickup.

We know that recycling is important and are working on a program that will give residents access to additional recycling drop-off locations in town. For a list of the current drop-off locations and tips on ways to repurpose your recycling bin click HERE.

If you would like to continue curbside recycling Ever Green Environmental is offering TR residents the opportunity to contract with them directly at the cost of $18 a month. You can sign up by visiting them online HERE or contacting them by phone at 864-230-9800.

Trail Spur to YMCA

The City in partnership with Upstate Greenways & Trails Alliance will begin construction in Fall, 2023 on a new trail spur that begins on Hwy. 276 next to the TR Highschool and terminates at the George I. Theisen YMCA.

Modeled after the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the spur will provide a much-needed safe, biking, and walking connection to the Downtown business district from the City’s west side. Financed by state and federal ARPA funds, the City, and Greenville County, the trail will include crosswalk enhancements at Hwy. 276 and will be owned and maintained by the City.

The Travelers Rest Planning Commission systematically prepares and re-evaluates the city’s Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan looks at elements considered critical, necessary, and desirable to guide development and redevelopment within the city. The Planning Commission is tasked with reviewing the Comprehensive Plan at least every five years, with the current Comprehensive Plan completed in 2018. As such, city staff in conjunction with the Planning Commission will be reviewing the 2018 plan over the next few months. Public input will be solicited and incorporated into the review. Keep an eye on the city’s website and social media for an announcement on how to get involved.

We’re Making News!!

We could not be more proud of the four-page feature article that appeared in the Travel section of the May/June issue of Cooking with Paula Deen magazine. Many of our wonderful restaurants, shops, and places to stay are featured. Find the full article HERE

The 2023 Music in the Park Concert Series kicks off Saturday, May 6th with a great lineup of bands! We asked our Facebook followers to help us pick the bands this year and received hundreds of suggestions. With that, we developed a great program and are looking forward to the series. Links to videos for each band and the food trucks scheduled for each concert can be found HERE
