The City of Travelers Rest is seeking to commission a public artwork for Main Street located in the vicinity of the Gazebo along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The project will memorialize the revolutionary war heroine, Dicey Langston, who lived a long life, raised over 20 children and was buried in Travelers Rest. As a young girl of 15, she risked her life for a cause in which she believed, our nations’ freedom. Her contributions were key in saving many Patriot lives and her acts of heroism are well documented in the historical record.

About Dicey Langston: https://www.americanrevolution.org/women/women26.php

This exciting project is being sponsored by the City of Travelers Rest, Greenville County Council, The Joyce Scott chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and endorsed by the Travelers Rest Historical Society. Finalists will be selected by a committee that will include an arts professional.

Artists may submit letters of interest and qualifications, along with images or project renderings of past work. The call is open to all professional artists working in a three-dimensional medium. The City is open to innovative concepts for this memorial that may include a figure cast in bronze but is not limited to that medium.

Up to 5 finalists will be selected based on qualifications and be requested to submit proposals for this outdoor /site-specific commission. Proposals need to include materials and designs that are durable through all types of weather over a long time period without extensive maintenance. Final installation must meet all current applicable codes. UV resistant and rust-resistant materials should be used.

Artwork should be constructed to reasonably discourage theft and vandalism and must take into consideration the ground surrounding the piece and be site-specific. The City is open to modification of existing site improvements to fully integrate the sculpture with the site. Include plans for nighttime lighting.

Site Description
The selected site is the area located on Main St, near the Gazebo, along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. It is desirable that the sculpture be accessible and approachable by trail users but not impede trail traffic and visible from the roadway. There are no known images of Dicey Langston but the sculpture should be identifiable and engaging as Dicey Langston through the presentation of her story. Artists should recommend an integrated approach to the acknowledgement of large-dollar donors.

Selection Criteria
Participating artists must have reached a certain level of expertise and recognition in their medium. Their resumes should illustrate that they have met two of the following criteria:
1. The artist’s works are included in private, public, corporate or museum collections;
